How to Import an Azure Event Hubs Namespace into Terraform

To import an existing Azure Event Hubs Namespace into Terraform, scan it with Terraback and run terraback azure import --method bulk. Terraback writes the matching azurerm_eventhub_namespace resource block and the Terraform 1.5+ import block for you, so you do not have to run terraform import by hand. The import ID is the full resource ID (.../providers/Microsoft.EventHub/namespaces/<name>).

Gotchas when importing a Azure Event Hubs Namespace

  • The namespace name must be globally unique; it forms the *.servicebus.windows.net hostname.
  • Event hubs inside the namespace are separate azurerm_eventhub resources.
  • auto_inflate_enabled and maximum_throughput_units only apply to the Standard SKU.
  • Switching to/from the Premium or Dedicated tier can force recreation; review the sku change carefully.

The native approach is to write the azurerm_eventhub_namespace block by hand, then run terraform import azurerm_eventhub_namespace.example <import-id> for every resource, one at a time.
